I was reading an article the other day published by Vox, basically describing the science and health benefits of why we should take notes the old fashioned way and not laptops or tablets. You can read it Here
Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer conducted a fascinating study; where they observed the note-taking habits of college students from UCLA to Princeton. In the study, students were asked to watch a 15 minute TED talk video, as they took notes along the way. They then compared the students who took notes by hand and the students who took notes on their laptop. They did tests and compared the students’ memory recall, they found that between the students who took notes via laptop versus students who used pencil and paper; while the factual recall of knowledge was very similar, their was a huge difference in conceptual recall.
Researches noticed that the student that used laptops to take notes, wrote down more words but remembered less. Whereas the students who took notes down by hand, wrote down less words but remembered the concepts better.
So next time I’m in a meeting, I’m going to try using a notebook and pen.
